Man arrested after altercation in Walmart parking lot in Newington

NEWINGTON, CT — Police arrested a Maryland man following a physical altercation in a Walmart parking lot that resulted in a firearm being discharged.

Officers responded to the Walmart at 3164 Berlin Turnpike at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 16 for a report of a physical altercation.

While officers were en route, dispatchers were informed that one person involved had a firearm and someone was injured.

The investigation revealed that Rashawn Harris, 26, of Westminster, Maryland, approached a vehicle as it was backing into a parking space and confronted the driver.

The driver exited the vehicle and the two engaged in a verbal argument that escalated into a physical altercation.

The driver had a valid pistol permit and was carrying a firearm.

During the altercation, the firearm was drawn and a single round was discharged.

No one sustained gunshot wounds, but both parties sustained injuries from the physical altercation.

Harris was identified as the aggressor in the incident.

He was arrested and charged with second-degree breach of peace.

Harris was held on $5,000 bond and presented to New Britain Superior Court on Nov. 17.

The driver has been cooperative with the investigation.
