Two drivers cited after head-on crash in Panton

PANTON, VT — Two drivers were cited following a head-on collision on Vermont Route 22a near Adirondack Lane on Nov. 13.

Vermont State Police responded to the crash at approximately 8:46 p.m.

Police said a 2024 Ford Ranger operated by Denis E. Hudon, 48, of Winooski, was traveling north on Vermont Route 22a when he attempted to pass a tractor-trailer also traveling north.

A 2019 Toyota Tacoma operated by Joseph E. Demers, 56, of Addison, was traveling south on Vermont Route 22a at the same time.

The two vehicles collided on the southbound shoulder of Vermont Route 22a.

Both vehicles came to rest on the southbound shoulder.

No injuries were reported.

Police determined Hudon had operated his vehicle in a negligent manner.

Hudon was released with a citation to appear in Addison County Superior Court, Criminal Division on Jan. 5, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. to answer to a charge of negligent operation.

While speaking with Demers, troopers observed indicators of impairment.

Demers was arrested on suspicion of DUI and transported to the Middlebury Police Department for processing.

Demers was released with a citation to appear in Addison County Superior Court, Criminal Division on Dec. 1 at 12:30 p.m. to answer to a charge of DUI, third offense.

Road conditions were wet and weather was cloudy at the time of the crash.

Troopers were assisted by the Middlebury Police Department, Vergennes Fire Department, Vergennes Rescue Squad and Snow & Tow Services.
