GATES, NY — A larceny suspect fleeing from police was struck and killed by a vehicle on Interstate 390 southbound near the Lyell Avenue overpass Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:10 p.m. during a foot pursuit by the Gates Police Department.
Police were chasing the suspect, who had fled from a nearby retail store, when he ran down an embankment and entered the southbound lanes of I-390.
The pedestrian, a 33-year-old male, was struck by a southbound vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.
The driver, Ronald M. Bandemer, 69, of Rochester, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Bandemer was transported to Highland Hospital for evaluation and has since been released.
At the request of the Gates Police Department, the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Collision Reconstruction Unit are leading the crash investigation.
The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene.
I-390 southbound was closed at Lexington Avenue for several hours while the scene was processed.
Detours were put in place and have since been lifted.
The New York State Attorney General’s Office was notified pursuant to protocol.
