GATES, NY — A shoplifting suspect died after being struck by a vehicle on Route 390 on Nov. 13.
Gates police officers responded to the Aldi on Spencerport Road at approximately 12:05 p.m. for a report of a larceny in progress.
Information was provided that the suspect had left the location on foot heading eastbound toward Lyell Avenue with a backpack of merchandise.
At approximately 12:10 p.m., a Gates police officer spotted the suspect on Lyell Avenue at the Route 390 bridge.
As the officer turned around, the suspect ran down the side of the bridge onto Route 390.
The officer observed the suspect cross multiple traffic lanes, where he was ultimately struck by a vehicle traveling south on Route 390.
The Gates police officer traversed the embankment, crossed Route 390 and immediately started life-saving measures.
The suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The New York State Police and New York State Attorney General’s Office have begun investigating the motor vehicle accident.
Gates police are not releasing further information until they confirm the suspect’s identity and make appropriate family notifications, according to Chief Robert Long.
