RED HOOK, NY — A smoke shop was shut down Wednesday following an investigation into unlawful cannabis sales and reports of customers becoming ill.
The Red Hook Police Department assisted investigators from the New York State Office of Cannabis Management Enforcement Team with an inspection at Red Hook Exotics, located at 7484 South Broadway.
The inspection stemmed from numerous complaints of unlawful sales of cannabis at the location as well as a report of people becoming ill after smoking illicit cannabis purchased at the store.
The inspection resulted in the discovery and seizure of illicit cannabis flower, edibles and concentrate.
The products seized included untested products from out of state and some with dangerously high levels of THC.
One brand of edible packages contained 5,000 milligrams of THC.
The business was issued a violation notice and sealed.
“OCM’s Enforcement Team is working across the state to make sure the law is followed and that only licensed businesses are allowed to sell cannabis products,” said Daniel Haughney, director of enforcement and investigations at the New York State Office of Cannabis Management.
“This ensures that the public is buying safer, tested products that meet New York State standards.”
