LANCASTER, NH — Police are warning residents about a phone scam targeting citizens with threats of arrest over missed jury duty.

The Lancaster Police Department received a report today from a resident who was contacted by someone claiming to be from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office.

The caller told the resident she had missed jury duty and needed to send payment via Venmo to avoid being arrested.

Police said no law enforcement officer will ever call and demand money to avoid arrest.

Authorities said such calls are always scams.

Police warned residents never to send money to unknown sources, especially through Venmo, gift cards or bitcoin.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call is asked to contact the Lancaster Police Department at 603-788-4402.
