COLONIE, NY — Police rescued a woman being held against her will at a Colonie motel Wednesday evening after her family reported concerns about her welfare.

Officers responded to the Motel 6 at 2700 Curry Road at approximately 6:12 p.m. Oct. 29 to assist Schenectady police with a welfare check.

The woman’s family had contacted Schenectady police after seeing a concerning social media post and being unable to reach her for several hours.

The investigation confirmed the woman was in a motel room with Rafael E. Gonzalez, 34, of Schenectady.

The Colonie Police Special Services Team was activated and successfully detained Gonzalez, who was found in possession of brass knuckles.

Police determined Gonzalez had held the woman against her will and physically assaulted her multiple times.

The woman was treated for her injuries at a hospital and released.

Gonzalez was charged with second-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree unlawful imprisonment and tampering with physical evidence, all felonies.

He was arraigned in Colonie Town Court and remanded to the Albany County Correctional Facility.

The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision assisted in the investigation.
