WEST DEPTFORD, NJ — Steve Hall, 28, of Waltham Cross, United Kingdom, has been charged with one count of second-degree death by auto and two counts of fourth-degree assault by auto, Gloucester County Prosecutor Andrew B. Johns announced.
A first appearance is to be scheduled in Gloucester County Central Judicial Processing Court.
On Nov. 9, at approximately 5:36 p.m., officers of the West Deptford Police Department were dispatched to PNS Gas and Food Mart in response to a report of two intoxicated males.
The officers responded to the location and observed a white vehicle matching the description of the vehicle associated with the intoxicated males.
Upon the officers’ arrival, the vehicle departed from the gas station and traveled onto Hessian Road.
One of the West Deptford Police Department officers was operating a marked unit and activated their emergency lights in an attempt to perform a stop of the vehicle.
Shortly thereafter, the vehicle traveled into the opposite lane of travel and made contact with another vehicle operated by a driver and occupied by a rear seat passenger.
The driver sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash.
The rear seat passenger sustained a leg fracture and described being t-boned by the vehicle.
Police identified the operator of the vehicle as Hall.
Hall also sustained injuries as a result of the crash.
The vehicle also contained a front seat passenger who sustained a dislocated hip.
A witness observed police lights at a distance, observed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, and observed the two vehicles make impact.
Because this case involves a fatality which arose from an encounter with police, the Attorney General’s Office is simultaneously investigating this matter as required by law.
The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, represented by Chief Assistant Prosecutor Alec Gutierrez, will prosecute the pending charges against Hall.
The maximum term of incarceration for a second-degree crime is 10 years’ imprisonment.
The maximum term of incarceration for a fourth-degree crime is 18 months’ imprisonment.
