UTICA, NY — New York State Police have arrested a man following a months-long investigation into the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl.
Darren A. Dunsmore, 34, of Utica, was taken into custody Nov. 7 in the parking lot of Market 32 on Genesee Street.
The investigation began in January when State Police received a report from the House of the Good Shepherd regarding a possible sexual assault involving a juvenile.
Members of the Marcy Bureau of Criminal Investigation conducted an extensive investigation in coordination with the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center and the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office.
The investigation determined that Dunsmore, who was known to the victim’s family, had engaged in sexual acts with the victim on more than one occasion earlier this year.
The suspect also exchanged explicit communications with the victim via social media.
An Oneida County Grand Jury indicted Dunsmore on multiple felony charges, and a Superior Court Warrant of Arrest was issued.
Members of the Troop D Felony Warrant Squad located Dunsmore and took him into custody without incident.
Dunsmore was charged with two counts of rape in the first degree, a class B felony; dissemination of indecent material to minors in the first degree, a class D felony; and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.
He was processed at SP Marcy and transported to the Oneida County Jail pending arraignment in Oneida County Court.
New York State Police were assisted by the Oneida County Child Advocacy Center, the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.
