SPRINGFIELD, MA — A Springfield man has been arrested in connection with a July homicide that left a 35-year-old man dead.
Lauvanghte Atkins, 21, of Springfield, was arrested Saturday night by members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit.
The arrest stems from a shooting that occurred at approximately 11:20 p.m. on July 12 in the 2700 block of Main Street.
Officers responding to a report of a gunshot victim located an adult male who was transported to Baystate, where he died from his injuries.
The Hampden District Attorney’s Office identified the victim as Webstern Grant-Stovall, 35.
The Springfield Police Homicide Unit, under the direction of Captain Trent Duda, investigated the case in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney’s Office.
Over the course of the investigation, detectives identified Atkins as a suspect.
A warrant for Atkins’ arrest was granted Friday.
Around 9 p.m. Saturday, Firearms Investigation Unit detectives observed Atkins driving a vehicle that parked at a restaurant in the 700 block of State Street.
Detectives conducted a traffic stop and arrested Atkins.
A loaded firearm was located inside the vehicle.
Atkins is expected to be arraigned in Springfield District Court on Monday.
He is charged with murder, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a loaded large-capacity firearm on a public way and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.
