Two arrested on drug, weapons charges in Woonsocket

WOONSOCKET, RI — A routine traffic stop for a seat belt violation led to the arrest of two people on drug and weapons charges Tuesday.

Sgt. Girard was working a Click It or Ticket enforcement detail, a RIDOT-funded highway safety program, when he stopped a vehicle on Holder Lane.

The driver was identified as Malda Tyks, 50, of Woonsocket, and the passenger was identified as her boyfriend, David Kennedy, 35, of Woonsocket.

Sgt. Girard observed what was later determined to be 1.31 ounces of crack cocaine in plain view in the door panel on Kennedy’s side.

Upon arrival of backup officers, the two were removed from the vehicle.

Kennedy was found to be in possession of another 2.2 ounces of fentanyl and a loaded magazine.

A loaded 9mm firearm was located in Tyks’ purse, which she was holding at the time of the stop, along with an additional small amount of fentanyl.

Also located in the vehicle were three pill bottles containing a large quantity of unknown pills and $933 in cash.

Kennedy is currently on federal probation and is a convicted felon.

Kennedy was charged with possession with intent to deliver fentanyl, possession with intent to deliver cocaine, possession of a firearm without a concealed carry permit, possession of a firearm while delivering a controlled substance, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and conspiracy.

Tyks was charged with possession with intent to deliver fentanyl, possession with intent to deliver cocaine, possession of a firearm without a concealed carry permit, possession of a firearm while delivering a controlled substance and conspiracy.
