Woman dies after vehicle enters pond in Richfield Springs

RICHFIELD SPRINGS, NY — State Police are investigating after a woman died when her vehicle entered a pond near the intersection of U.S. Route 20 and Skinner Road.

Rachel Galesky, 39, of Richfield Springs, was operating a Mitsubishi Mirage on Cole Hill Road when she failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with U.S. Route 20 and continued off the roadway into the pond, according to police.

A passerby called 911 at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 4 after observing what appeared to be a portion of a vehicle submerged in the pond.

Troopers from the Richfield Springs barracks located the vehicle and discovered Galesky deceased inside.

A preliminary investigation determined the crash occurred sometime overnight.

Members of the Underwater Recovery Team assisted at the scene.

Richfield Fire/EMS and the Otsego County Coroner also responded.
