CAMDEN, NJ — A police officer and a suspect were injured during a shooting incident in Camden on Tuesday night, reported Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Camden County Police Chief Gabriel Rodriguez.
At approximately 10:50 p.m., officers from the Camden County Police Department were attempting to conduct a pedestrian stop with an adult male near Chesapeake Road and Congress Road.
During that time, the man pointed a handgun in the direction of an officer and fired multiple gunshots.
The officer was struck once by gunfire in his left arm.
After the officer was struck by gunfire, a sergeant returned fire and struck the man once in the body.
The man was identified as Marques Jones, 25, of Camden.
After being struck by gunfire, Jones was placed under arrest.
Both the officer and Jones were transported to Cooper University Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
The officer was reported to be in stable condition and Jones was reported to be in critical condition.
A handgun was recovered in the area where Jones was standing when the officer was shot.
Jones has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, third-degree pointing a firearm at a law enforcement officer, and fourth-degree possession of prohibited weapons/devices.
The investigation into the shooting of the officer is being overseen by the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit.
