BATH, NY — A man armed with a knife was taken into custody Nov. 3 after officers used less lethal force to disarm him during a standoff at a Pine Street residence.
Officers with the Village of Bath Police Department were dispatched to the address at approximately 1:17 p.m. for a report of an armed male inside the residence.
Upon arrival, officers spoke with residents who had safely exited their home.
The residents advised that the male, who did not live there, was still inside the apartment and armed with the knife.
Officers entered the apartment after receiving permission from the residents.
Inside, officers made contact with Robert E. Wood, 48, who was known to officers and observed to be armed with a large knife.
Officers immediately began utilizing de-escalation and negotiation tactics in an attempt to convince Wood to drop the knife.
De-escalation efforts were unsuccessful and Wood remained armed and an immediate threat to himself and others, resulting in the use of a less lethal shotgun.
Wood was struck twice by less lethal shotgun bean bag rounds, which were effective in disarming him.
Wood was subsequently taken into custody without further incident.
Wood, who was determined to be under the influence of dangerous drugs, was transported to a local hospital.
Wood was treated for his injuries resulting from the impact of the bean bag rounds and underwent a mental health evaluation.
Upon release from the hospital, Wood was charged with Menacing a Police Officer and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree, both Class D Felonies.
Wood is a four time convicted felon.
Wood was processed and transported to the Steuben County Jail for CAP arraignment where he remains held.
