Driver killed in three-vehicle crash on I-87 in Bethlehem

BETHLEHEM, NY — A three-vehicle crash on Interstate 87 northbound near Exit 23 left one driver dead on the afternoon of Nov. 1.

State Police Troopers from Troop T responded to the scene at approximately 4:44 p.m.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2011 Chevrolet sedan driven by William F. McAllister, 37, of Ringgold, Virginia, was traveling north in the left lane at a high rate of speed when it attempted to move into the right lane, sideswiping a 2009 Ram pickup truck on its driver’s side.

The Chevrolet sedan then veered back into the left lane where it rear-ended a 2025 Chevrolet sedan.

The 2011 Chevrolet came to a stop on the right shoulder, while the 2025 Chevrolet came to a stop on the left shoulder after striking the guardrail.

The driver of the 2025 Chevrolet, Claudia Hargis-Grover, 63, of Glens Falls, New York, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A passenger in the 2025 Chevrolet was transported to Albany Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Ram pickup and a passenger were both transported to Albany Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

McAllister was administered standardized field sobriety tests, which showed no signs of impairment.

McAllister was administered a preliminary breath test, which was negative for the presence of alcohol.

He was transported to Albany Medical Center for medical evaluation.

McAllister was charged with multiple vehicle and traffic law violations.

The State Police Latham Bureau of Criminal Investigation is continuing the investigation.
