MEDWAY, MA — A school bus driver was arrested for disorderly conduct after striking a child on a bicycle in a crosswalk.
Medway Dispatch received a call at about 8 a.m. reporting that a school bus had struck a child riding his bike in the area of the Burke-Memorial School complex.
Responding officers found that the bus had been driving on Cassidy Lane at a low speed while a child was riding his bike in the Cassidy Lane crosswalk.
The bus and the bicycle collided.
One of the bike tires went under the front tire of the bus, causing the child to fall to the ground.
The child did not suffer any serious injury and was not transported after evaluation by Medway Fire/EMS and consultation with a parent.
The bus driver was placed under arrest by a responding officer due to his behavior when emotions were high after the crash.
The arrest was not the result of what occurred during the crash itself.
A knife was removed from the bus driver’s possession during the arrest; however, the knife was not illegal to possess, and no charges related to the knife will be brought.
Kenneth Benjamin, 69, of Franklin, Massachusetts, was charged with one count of being a disorderly person and civilly cited for failure to stop for a person in a crosswalk.
