MILFORD, MA — A police sergeant was treated for smoke inhalation after entering a burning building to search for a resident who had already evacuated.
The Milford Public Safety Communications Center received a 911 call at 4:38 p.m. Monday reporting smoke in the building at 72 Main Street.
Members of the Milford Fire Department arrived at 4:43 p.m. and began investigating the smoke condition within the mixed-use building housing the Turtle Tavern and residential apartments.
Fire was found extending through the outside of the building at 4:46 p.m.
At 4:51 p.m., Sgt. Patrick Dailey of the Milford Police Department was informed of a resident still on the third floor of the smoke-filled building.
Dailey proceeded to the third-floor apartment with low visibility and poor breathing conditions in an attempt to rescue the resident, but found the apartment empty.
The resident was located outside during an evacuation of neighboring buildings.
Dailey was transported to Milford Regional Hospital for smoke inhalation treatment and was later released.
Firefighters from several towns remained on scene battling the fire until after 11 p.m.
A large portion of Main Street and the surrounding area remained closed Tuesday as crews worked to clear the remnants of the building.
The area was expected to reopen at approximately 10 p.m.
