Man arrested on car break charges in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA — A Springfield man faces multiple charges after police say he broke into vehicles at a hotel early Tuesday morning.

Alex Mestre, 26, of Springfield, was arrested at approximately 2:20 a.m. on East Columbus Avenue.

Officers responded around 2 a.m. to a hotel on the 800 block of East Columbus Avenue for a report of a suspect breaking into motor vehicles.

Members of the Springfield Police Real-Time Analysis Center used city cameras to provide officers with a description of the suspect.

Officers located Mestre on Norwood Street.

Police say Mestre is suspected of breaking into at least two vehicles.

When officers stopped Mestre, he had a toolbox on him, which was returned to one of the vehicle owners.

Police say Mestre had crack cocaine and unknown pills on him.

Mestre had two outstanding arrest warrants.

Mestre is charged with breaking and entering into a vehicle at nighttime for a felony (two counts), larceny over $1,200 (two counts), possession of a Class B drug and possession of a Class E drug.

He also faces charges on an arrest warrant from Springfield District Court for negligent operation of a motor vehicle and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Mestre also faces charges on a default warrant from Springfield District Court for uttering a false check, forgery of a check and attempt to commit a crime.
