Burglary, vehicle theft reported in Nutley

NUTLEY, NJ — Police are investigating a burglary and vehicle theft that occurred early Thursday morning on Prospect Street.

An unknown individual entered a resident’s home through an unlocked basement door at approximately 4:35 a.m.

The suspect took a bag containing personal items, including the victim’s credit cards, driver’s license and vehicle key fob.

The suspect then stole the victim’s 2025 BMW X5.

The suspect arrived in a gray Audi SUV that fled the scene with the stolen BMW.

The Nutley Police Detective Bureau is actively investigating the incident.

Police said there have been similar incidents in the past throughout the state where suspects enter homes to steal vehicle keys to vehicles parked in driveways.

Police are encouraging residents to ensure all doors and windows are locked securely, keep vehicles locked without keys or key fobs inside, maintain working lighting and sensor lights, ensure surveillance cameras are working and properly recording, and keep alarms functioning and activated.
