Man arrested after scooter chase in Guttenberg

GUTTENBERG, NJ — A Jersey City man faces multiple charges after allegedly fleeing from police on a stolen scooter and barricading himself in a vacant building.

Felix R. Astacio-Leon, 29, of Jersey City, was arrested on Oct. 28 following a pursuit that began in Guttenberg and ended in North Bergen.

Police Officer Marc Greenwood attempted to stop a male driving a scooter for motor vehicle violations at approximately 4:33 p.m.

The driver failed to stop and fled into North Bergen, according to the Guttenberg Police Department.

The North Bergen Police Department located the scooter and notified Guttenberg police.

Officers determined the scooter had been stolen from Jersey City.

Police established a perimeter near 70th Street and Bergenwood Avenue, where they discovered a backpack and shoes on a nearby rooftop.

Officers observed a vacant property with a broken window near the items.

K9 officers from the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office assisted in searching the vacant building.

Astacio-Leon was located inside the property and arrested.

A search incident to arrest led to the recovery of several capsules containing a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine, psilocybin mushrooms and burglary tools, police said.

Astacio-Leon was charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, eluding, possession of burglary tools and possession of psilocybin.

He was issued a complaint warrant and traffic summonses before being lodged in the Hudson County Correctional Center.
