STAMFORD, CT — A Stamford man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a 12-year-old riding a mini-bike in August.
Juan Carlos Umana-Umana, 41, of Stamford, surrendered at police headquarters on Oct. 27 and was charged with misconduct with a motor vehicle, felony evading responsibility and tampering with evidence.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:47 p.m. on Aug. 2 in the area of 316 Courtland Ave.
Police said the juvenile victim was riding a mini-bike southbound on Courtland Avenue with a family member who was on a scooter.
The two had pulled onto the shoulder of the roadway for an unknown reason when a vehicle struck the mini-bike, throwing the 12-year-old into the yard of a private residence.
The vehicle fled the scene after the collision.
Officers from the Patrol Division, Bureau of Criminal Investigations and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad identified the suspect vehicle as a 2004 Honda Accord.
Investigators obtained a search and seizure warrant for the vehicle with assistance from the Stamford Superior Court Prosecutor’s Office.
Police said Umana-Umana told investigators he had an attorney and would not provide any information.
An arrest warrant application was reviewed by the State’s Attorney’s Office and signed by a Stamford Superior Court judge.
Umana-Umana was released after posting a $200,000 court-set bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 10.
