LAWRENCE, MA — Officers observed a large group of dirt bike riders in the downtown area operating recklessly, speeding, weaving through traffic and disregarding traffic laws on Saturday evening.
Several riders were later seen refueling their bikes in the Broadway area that night.
As officers approached, one suspect attempted to flee.
When officers moved in to detain him, he became disorderly and resisted arrest.
During the incident, a group of dirt bike riders surrounded the officers, coming dangerously close to striking them.
Additional patrol units responded quickly, and the group dispersed.
As the night progressed, the dirt bike riders continued their reckless activity.
One rider was observed operating inside the South Common.
In an effort to stop this dangerous behavior, an officer entered the park with lights and sirens activated and was involved in an accident, sustaining minor injuries while acting to protect the public.
The suspect taken into custody earlier in the evening was transported to the Lawrence Police Department, where he was booked on the following charges: disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, unregistered motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle/trailer, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.
