Deck fire caused by lithium-ion batteries in Perth Amboy

PERTH AMBOY, NJ — Firefighters extinguished a deck fire caused by lithium-ion batteries on Saturday morning.

The Perth Amboy Fire Department was dispatched at 8:02 a.m. to a reported structure fire in the 300 block of Wagner Avenue.

Arriving units found the rear deck on fire with extension to the back of the home.

Prior to fire department arrival, a passer-by alerted the occupants of the fire and used a garden hose to contain the fire from spreading to nearby homes.

Fire crews quickly stretched two hoselines to contain and extinguish the fire while searches were completed.

All occupants had safely evacuated and there were no injuries to report.

In the area of origin under the deck, fire damaged lithium-ion battery packs and batteries were found.

Middlesex County Hazmat was requested and responded to properly contain and remove them.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Perth Amboy Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit.

City units on scene were E-1, E-2, T-2, R-1, C-1, C-3 and C-5 along with County Hazmat.

E-3 covered the city during the incident.
