Man arrested after ATV crash in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA — A man riding a stolen ATV was arrested after crashing into a vehicle and fighting with police officers.

Officers were patrolling in the area of State Street and Thompson Street around 7:10 p.m. Thursday when they observed a rider on an ATV.

The rider, later identified as Kerluis Torres, drove into the back of a vehicle in traffic.

The ATV became lodged under the car.

Torres attempted to reverse the ATV and flee the scene.

Officers exited their cruiser as Torres continued to try and free the ATV.

Torres began fighting with officers.

Torres then grabbed an officer’s baton and ripped it off their utility belt.

An officer utilized a department-issued taser and assisting officers took him into custody.

The ATV was reported stolen out of Massachusetts and was seized.

Torres also had an outstanding arrest warrant out of Holyoke District Court for 11 charges.

Kerluis Torres, 24, of Holyoke is charged with leaving the scene of a property damage crash, two counts of assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, defacement of property, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, unregistered motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle, helmet violation, negligent operation of a snow/recreational vehicle and assault and battery attempt to disarm a police officer.

The arrest warrant charges include resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, no inspection sticker, motor vehicle operator refuse to identify self, failure to stop for police, lights violation, window obstructed/non-transparent, possession with the intent to distribute a Class A drug, possession of a Class B drug and possession of a Class C drug.
