PATTERSON, NY — A 47-year-old man was arrested following a four-hour barricade situation at a condominium complex on Oct. 16.
Nicholas Rodriguez, of Patterson, was taken into custody at approximately 9:30 p.m. after deputies responded to a report at 5 p.m. of a man dressed in full camouflage menacing a neighbor with what appeared to be a firearm, according to Acting Sheriff Brian Hess.
Upon arrival, deputies attempted to make contact with Rodriguez, who barricaded himself inside his residence and made statements suggesting he was in possession of an explosive device.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team and Hostage Negotiations Team were activated and responded to the scene.
Shortly after Rodriguez was secured, a fire was discovered inside the residence.
It remains unclear whether the fire was accidental or intentionally set, and the cause is under investigation.
Rodriguez was charged with assault in the second degree, attempted assault in the second degree, criminal mischief in the third degree and menacing in the second degree.
He was arraigned in Patterson Town Court and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.
The Town of Kent Police Department, Town of Carmel Police Department, Village of Brewster Police Department, New York State Police, Patterson Fire Department and assisting fire and EMS agencies provided support during the incident.
