SPRINGFIELD, MA — Police are warning residents about a phone scam using the name of the department’s superintendent.
The Springfield Police Department said it has received reports of residents getting calls asking them to donate to a “grant for the elderly” or similar causes.
The caller is using Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers’ name, according to police.
Akers and the police department are not associated with the calls, police said.
Police are asking residents who receive the call to hang up.
Anyone who falls victim to the scam should file a police report, police said.
Police are asking residents to share the warning with older relatives, friends and neighbors.
