MALTA — The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office arrested a state employee Wednesday accused of working a second job while on the clock for his primary employer.
Mehul A. Goswami, 39, of Latham, New York, was charged with grand larceny in the second degree, a class C felony.
Goswami is accused of working a second job in Malta while working remotely for the New York State Office of Information Technology Services.
He allegedly stole more than $50,000 from the state of New York as a result.
The arrest was the result of a joint investigation between the Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Inspector General’s Office.
“We truly value the relationships we have with our law enforcement partners,” said Sheriff Michael H. Zurlo.
“This is a perfect example of the power of collaboration and we look forward to this case’s successful resolution in court.”
“Public employees are entrusted with the responsibility to serve with integrity, and Mr. Goswami’s alleged conduct represents a serious breach of that trust,” said New York State Inspector General Lucy Lang.
“Working a second, full-time job while claiming to be working for the State is an abuse of public resources, including taxpayer dollars.
My office will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to hold anyone accountable who would undermine the integrity of public service in New York State.”
Goswami was arraigned before Judge James A. Fauci in Malta Town Court and released on his own recognizance pending further proceedings.
The charge is not considered a qualifying offense for setting bail under New York state law that went into effect in January 2020.
