PORTLAND — A South Portland man was arrested Monday after allegedly attempting to steal a vehicle while the owner was pumping gas at a Congress Street gas station.
Portland Police responded to 1196 Congress Street at the Mobile Gas Station at approximately 4:58 p.m. for a report of an assault.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle owner was pumping gas when a male suspect entered the vehicle and attempted to drive away.
The owner intervened by jumping onto the suspect as the vehicle crashed into nearby bushes.
When officers arrived, they observed the vehicle owner restraining the suspect, who was quickly taken into custody.
The suspect was identified as 38-year-old Aaric Rowe of South Portland.
Rowe was transported to the Cumberland County Jail but was denied entry due to a pre-existing medical issue.
He was subsequently admitted to Maine Medical Center.
Rowe was issued a criminal summons for reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, theft by unauthorized use of property and robbery.
