Car crashes into river in Lowell, driver cited for DUI

LOWELL — A Milton man crashed his car into the East Branch Missisquoi River on Monday evening and was later cited for driving under the influence.

Daniel Gilbert, 37, was traveling north on Vermont Route 100 at approximately 6:44 p.m. when his 2008 Honda Accord went off the roadway to the right and into the river below, according to Vermont State Police.

Gilbert was the only occupant of the vehicle and was wearing a seat belt.

He sustained minor injuries in the crash and was transported by Newport EMS to North Country Hospital.

Road conditions were wet due to light rain at the time of the crash.

A state trooper met with Gilbert at the hospital, where Gilbert showed indicators of impairment.

Gilbert was processed for DUI and later issued a citation.

The vehicle sustained damage to all panels and was totaled.
