GROTON — The City of Groton Police Department responded to 39 Broad Street Extension at approximately 4:52 p.m. Oct. 11 for a report of a structure fire with entrapment.
Officers observed large clouds of dark smoke coming from the side of the building upon arrival.
Police assisted the City of Groton Fire Department and mutual aid departments in evacuating residents as flames and smoke emerged from the third and fourth floors.
Two residents were trapped on the fourth floor and were rescued by the fire department.
Multiple residents were transported to the hospital for treatment.
The extent of their injuries is currently unknown.
The Red Cross responded to help displaced residents.
The City of Groton Detective Division, City of Groton Fire Marshal, Connecticut State Troopers and the Fire & Explosion Investigations Unit are actively investigating the incident.
A municipal building has been opened with Red Cross assistance to provide shelter to those displaced by the fire.
