West Oneonta police urge residents to lock vehicles after recent thefts

WEST ONEONTA — New York State Police are urging residents to take a simple but critical precaution to prevent vehicle related thefts.

Troopers have responded to reports of thefts from unlocked vehicles, making them easy targets for criminals.

Most recently, incidents occurred in the West Oneonta area sometime between 9 p.m. Oct. 9 and 7:30 a.m. Oct. 10.

Vehicles were rummaged through, a wallet was reported stolen and spare change was taken.

Many of these crimes are a crime of opportunity, with thieves pulling on door handles until they find one that’s unlocked.

Police recommend always locking your car, even when parked in your driveway or garage.

They advise never leaving valuables in plain sight and say if you must leave them in the car, store them in the trunk, though the best practice is to take your valuables with you.

Police also recommend not leaving keys or key fobs in your vehicle and parking in well-lit areas whenever possible.

Other suggestions include installing cameras or flood lights at your residence.

Police ask residents to report any suspicious activity by calling 911.

Authorities ask residents to take a few extra seconds to make sure their vehicles are locked and check on elderly neighbors who may not be as aware of these crimes.
