Springfield police seize heroin, loaded firearm in drug trafficking investigation

SPRINGFIELD — Members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit seized a loaded large capacity firearm and trafficking weight of heroin and fentanyl while arresting two suspects on Oct. 9.

The arrests occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. on the 500 block of Canon Circle during the execution of a search warrant.

Detectives had been investigating illegal drug distribution in the Temple Street area with Anthony Gonzalez as a suspect.

Officers applied for and were granted a warrant to search Gonzalez’s home on Canon Circle and his vehicle.

Three adults, including Gonzalez, and two children were inside the apartment when the warrant was executed.

During the apartment search, detectives recovered approximately 549 bags of fentanyl and heroin weighing approximately 11 grams.

Officers also recovered nearly 500 rounds of various ammunition and a loaded large-capacity firearm containing 15 rounds.

A vehicle search yielded approximately 3.7 grams of cocaine.

Police arrested Gonzalez and Kayliannie Mata, while the other adult and children were released.

Gonzalez has a prior conviction for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Anthony Gonzalez, 25, of Springfield faces charges including fentanyl trafficking more than 10 grams, possession with intent to distribute class A and B drugs, possession of a large capacity firearm, firearm violation with one prior violent/drug crime, possession of ammunition without an FID card, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm without an FID card, improper storage of a large capacity firearm and two counts of reckless endangerment of a child.

Kayliannie Mata, 27, of Springfield is charged with possession of ammunition without an FID card, possession of a firearm without an FID card, improper storage of a large capacity firearm and possession of a large capacity firearm.

The operation involved members of the Springfield Police Emergency Services Unit and the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department.
