AUBURN — A Webster man was arrested Oct. 2 after allegedly scamming a local tire shop out of more than $15,000, Auburn police said.
Jason Dwinell, 37, was charged with two counts of receiving stolen property over $1,200 after an investigation that began Sept. 16.
Officer Alex Myers was assigned to investigate the scam after the tire shop reported suspicious activity.
Police said Dwinell used the fake name “David Young” to set up a business account with the shop.
Over eight transactions, he accumulated more than $15,000 in tires and rims using the fraudulent account, according to police.
The suspect fled when the store discovered the scheme, but police said he made several mistakes that led to his identification.
Dwinell provided his real phone number to the store and displayed tattoos that were already in Auburn police files, officers said.
Officer Myers used that information to identify the suspect and obtain an arrest warrant.
A tip from Douglas police helped officers locate Dwinell at an address in Webster on the morning of Oct. 2.
Officer Myers, Detective Sgt. Daniel Lamoreaux and Detective Jordan Ryan arrested Dwinell with assistance from Webster police.
Dwinell was arraigned later that day in Worcester District Court and released on $1,000 bail.
