MARION — Chief Richard Nighelli reports that the Marion Police Department arrested a Wareham man on gun, drug, and OUI charges on Saturday.
Brian M. Ewan, age 67, of Wareham, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm without a firearms identification card (subsequent offense), possession of ammunition without a firearms identification card (subsequent offense), carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a large-capacity feeding device, possession of a sawed-off shotgun, operating under the influence of liquor, possession of a class B drug, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, and no inspection/sticker.
On Saturday, Oct. 4, at about 3:34 p.m., Officer Patrick Adams responded to a gas station at 406 Wareham Road for a report of a man passed out in a vehicle.
Officer Adams found a man, subsequently identified as Ewan, unresponsive in the driver’s seat with the key in the ignition and several open alcohol containers in plain view.
Officer Adams began an on-scene investigation.
During the investigation, Detective Scott Smith, who responded to assist, noticed a bulge on Ewan’s waistband consistent with a firearm.
Detective Smith attempted to search Ewan, who resisted.
A struggle ensued.
Detective Smith was able to gain control of Ewan and secure a Taurus G3C 9mm handgun that Ewan had been concealing in a holster on his waistband.
While the handgun was being secured, Officer Adams, with the assistance of members of Marion Fire/EMS, placed Ewan in handcuffs.
During a further search, Officer Adams located loose .22-caliber bullets on Ewan’s person and a knotted clear glassine bag containing a white powdery substance that later tested positive for cocaine.
Officer Mark Norman located a sawed-off Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun while conducting an inventory search of Ewan’s vehicle.
Detectives stopped the search at that point and applied for a search warrant for the pickup truck, which was granted.
The investigation is ongoing as of Monday morning, and further charges are expected at the outcome of the investigation.
Ewan was arrested and is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in Wareham District Court.
