String of vehicle break-ins reported in Dryden area

DRYDEN — State troopers and Tompkins County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a series of vehicle “smash and grabs” in eastern Tompkins County.

These crimes involve suspects breaking windows and stealing valuables from parked cars within seconds.

Troopers received a report on Oct. 1 about a vehicle with its front passenger window smashed and items stolen, including a wallet with identification and credit cards.

The vehicle was unoccupied in a parking lot near Dryden Lake.

A second person reported a smashed window and vehicle rummaging at a pull off on Chaffee Road.

The sheriff’s department responded to four similar break-ins involving parked, unoccupied vehicles on the same day.

The incidents occurred between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Remove all valuables from your car, especially electronics, wallets and bags.

Take belongings with you or lock them in the trunk before reaching your destination.

Park in well-lit areas when possible.

State Police are asking Dryden and Lansing area residents to review surveillance footage from Oct. 1 between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.
