BOSTON — Two men were arrested Wednesday night following a violent altercation with police officers outside MGM Music Hall that left one officer hospitalized.
The incident began at about 9:50 p.m. Oct. 1 when security personnel at the venue on Lansdowne Street requested police assistance to remove a patron from the building.
Edwin Rivera, 30, of Mashpee, became increasingly combative as officers escorted him toward the exit, according to Boston Police Department.
Upon reaching the Lansdowne Street exit, Rivera threw a beverage at an officer and swung at him, then grabbed the officer’s jacket and attempted to pull him toward the crowded sidewalk.
During the struggle, Rivera reached for the officer’s department-issued firearm and dislodged the officer’s radio, police said.
Officers eventually brought Rivera to the ground and handcuffed him after he repeatedly resisted arrest.
Steven Costa, 27, of Hyannis, interfered with the arrest by yelling at officers and attempting to strike another officer who had fallen during the altercation, police said.
Costa ignored multiple verbal commands and warnings, leading officers to deploy a Taser to subdue and arrest him.
Boston EMS transported one officer to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident.
EMS also evaluated both suspects, who did not require hospitalization.
Rivera continued to be combative upon arrival at the police facility and refused to participate in the booking process, police said.
Rivera faces charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a police officer, attempt to disarm a police officer, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, intimidation of a police officer, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace.
Costa is charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, intimidation of a police officer, interfering with a police officer, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace.
Both men will be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.
