Officers responded to the 2800 block of Main Street at approximately 10:35 p.m. Monday for a report of a stabbing victim.
Officers located an adult male victim suffering from a stab wound.
The victim was transported to Baystate Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
The Springfield Police Homicide Unit under the direction of Captain Trent Duda began investigating in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney’s Murder Unit.
While homicide detectives were on scene Monday night, officers received information about a suspect, later identified as 36-year-old Hector Lopez.
Officers located Lopez on the 2600 block of Main Street.
Lopez had an outstanding warrant and was placed under arrest for those charges.
Homicide detectives continued to investigate and Tuesday morning requested a murder charge be issued for Lopez in connection with the fatal stabbing.
Lopez is expected to be arraigned in Springfield District Court Wednesday.
Lopez of Springfield is charged with murder and arrest warrant violations including unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration and miscellaneous motor vehicle equipment violation.
