94-year-old woman dies in Venice intersection crash

VENICE — A 94-year-old woman died in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Route 34B and Poplar Ridge Road on Sept. 30, according to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

Elizabeth MacCormick was driving a silver Toyota Corolla east on Poplar Ridge Road around 2:19 p.m. when she failed to yield the right of way at the intersection, Sheriff Brian Schenck said.

A dump truck traveling north on Route 34B struck the Toyota, according to a preliminary investigation.

MacCormick, who was the sole occupant of the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The dump truck operator, 77-year-old Charles Signor, was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.

The investigation is ongoing.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the New York State Police, Cayuga County 911, Cayuga County Coroner’s Office, Southern Cayuga Ambulance, Four Town Ambulance, Long Hill Fire Department, Scipio Fire Department, Poplar Ridge Fire Department, the Town of Venice Highway Department and the New York State Department of Transportation.
