Colonie police arrest 2 in elderly scam attempt at credit union

COLONIE — The Colonie Police Department arrested two Flushing, N.Y., men Wednesday after they allegedly attempted to scam an elderly customer out of $30,000 at a local credit union.

Police responded to Community Resource Federal Credit Union at 20 Wade Road at approximately 2:21 p.m. Sept. 24 for a potential scam.

An alert bank employee reported that an elderly male customer seemed confused and was attempting to withdraw $30,000 cash for a “construction project.”

The employee said the customer’s actions were being directed via telephone by an unknown person.

Colonie police officers and investigators responded to the bank and posed as the victim.

Police arranged to turn the cash over to the suspect in person.

The investigation resulted in the arrests of Huifeng Jin, 43, and Qinghua Wang, 34, both of Flushing, N.Y.

Jin was charged with assault on a police officer, grand larceny in the third degree and resisting arrest.

Wang was charged with grand larceny in the third degree.

Jin was arraigned in Colonie Town Court and remanded to the Albany County Correctional Facility pending a preliminary hearing.

Wang was arraigned and released under the supervision of probation.

A Colonie Police Department investigator suffered a significant injury while making the arrest.
