MAMAKATING — A New York State Trooper shot a dog Wednesday afternoon during an ongoing investigation in the Town of Mamakating.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:21 p.m. when the trooper, assigned to the State Police Wurtsboro barracks, was conducting neighborhood interviews near a residence on Elm Road.

The trooper rang the doorbell and heard a dog inside the home.

In preparation for speaking with the occupants, the trooper walked down the front steps and positioned himself behind a nearby vehicle.

When a resident opened the door, the dog exited the residence in an aggressive manner and charged toward the trooper.

The trooper was backed into a corner with no viable cover or avenue of retreat.

Fearing for his safety, the trooper discharged his issued firearm multiple times, striking the dog.

The trooper immediately requested backup, and two additional troopers as well as a supervisor responded to the scene.

The dog was transported to a nearby veterinary clinic where it was treated for its injuries.

The incident is currently under investigation.
