MIDDLESEX — A Vermont State Police cruiser struck a bear on Interstate 89 north early Thursday morning, causing moderate damage to the vehicle but no injuries to the trooper.

Trooper Jae Farnum-Boylan, 28, of Williston was driving north on I-89 around 1:25 a.m. when a bear emerged from the center median into the cruiser’s path near mile marker 57.6.

The 2021 Ford Explorer struck the bear with its left front, causing damage to the left front fender, left side and undercarriage.

The impact deployed all airbags in the cruiser, but Farnum-Boylan was not injured.

State troopers and local fire and rescue squads responded to the scene.

Road conditions were wet from rain at the time of the crash.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident.
