HOLYOKE — Holyoke police arrested a 22-year-old man and seized cocaine and heroin/fentanyl as part of the department’s Parks Engagement Initiative on Tuesday.
Officers arrested Felix Vargas of Belchertown around 6:15 p.m. at Gramps Park, according to Police Chief Brian Keenan.
Officer Johnathan Ortiz was working the Parks Engagement Initiative when he observed suspected drug activity.
Officers Justo Pagan, Xavier DeJesus and Marian Rivera arrived to assist.
Vargas began walking away while reaching into his pockets as officers approached, then ran down an alley and tried to push past an officer before being detained.
Officers found two knives, approximately 50 bags of heroin/fentanyl and a bag of cocaine.
Vargas is charged with possession with intent to distribute a Class A drug, possession with intent to distribute a Class B drug – subsequent offense, possession of a Class A drug, possession of a Class B drug, assault and battery on a police officer, and resisting arrest.
