Police chase ends with gun, drug charges in Ghent

GHENT — A traffic stop attempt on the Taconic State Parkway led to a high-speed chase and the arrest of three Brooklyn men on firearm charges Sept. 22.

A state trooper assigned to State Police Livingston attempted to stop a white Porsche Panamera traveling southbound on the parkway at approximately 8:12 a.m.

The vehicle initially pulled into the Ghent Overlook, but the driver fled at high speed as the trooper approached.

A tire deflation device was deployed, causing the vehicle to stop near Pumpkin Lane.

The driver, Omer Abugana, 21, of Brooklyn, along with passengers Shayne Nicholas, 19, of Brooklyn, and Ali O. Hamed, 20, of Brooklyn, were taken into custody without incident.

Police discovered a black Remington RP9 handgun during an inventory of the vehicle.

All three men were charged with criminal possession of a firearm in the second degree, a class C felony.

Abugana faces additional charges including unlawful fleeing a police officer, aggravated unlicensed operation in the third degree, reckless driving and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations.

All three defendants were arraigned in Claverack Town Court.

Abugana was remanded without bail to the Columbia County Jail.

Nicholas and Hamed were remanded in lieu of $15,000 cash bail, $30,000 bond, or a $27,500 partially secured bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. in the Town of Ghent Court.
