Auburn man accidentally shoots himself while firing at street sign

AUBURN — New York State Police from SP Auburn, along with members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), responded to Riester Road in the town of Fleming on Sept. 23 at approximately 3:03 p.m. for a report of a male with a gunshot wound.

Troopers arrived on scene and located Bryon Wiler, age 55, of Auburn, who had sustained a non-life-threatening injury to his arm.

An investigation determined that Wiler had shot a street sign with an illegally possessed 9mm handgun and accidentally struck his own arm.

He was also operating a vehicle at the time and was found to be intoxicated.

Wiler was charged with criminal possession of a weapon 2nd (C felony), driving while intoxicated and criminal mischief 4th (A misdemeanor).

On Sept. 24, Wiler was processed at SP Auburn and was transported to Cayuga County Jail for CAP arraignment.
