Albany, NY man arrested after domestic incident escalates to police confrontation

ALBANY — A city man was arrested Saturday night after a domestic incident escalated into a confrontation with police.

Officers responded to a residence on Albany Street near Broadway at approximately 9:10 p.m. after a report of a domestic altercation.

Police determined that Michael Haight, 34, and a victim were involved in a verbal argument that became physical.

Haight allegedly punched the victim, choked her and threw her to the ground before officers arrived.

As police attempted to make contact, Haight emerged from a bedroom and threw a knife at them.

He then retreated into the bedroom and refused to comply with commands.

The Albany Police Department’s Emergency Service Unit and Crisis Management Team were dispatched to the scene.

Haight made several threats during the incident, including statements that he would kill everyone.

After numerous attempts to call him out, the Emergency Service Unit deployed a chemical agent.

Haight was taken into custody without further incident.

The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Haight was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital for a mental health evaluation.

He faces charges including two counts of attempted assault, two counts of menacing a police officer, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, one count of criminal obstruction of breathing, one count of assault and one count of criminal mischief.

Haight is scheduled for arraignment in Albany City Criminal Court on Monday.
