Woman charged with attempted murder in Albany, NY street shooting

ALBANY — A 25-year-old Rensselaer woman has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a shooting that occurred last month on Albany Street.

Yesterday, members from the Albany Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Unit executed a search warrant at a residence on Third Street in Rensselaer in connection with the August shooting incident.

During the search warrant, detectives recovered a loaded 9mm handgun and a quantity of cocaine.

Celanna Smith was located inside the residence at the time of the search warrant and was taken into custody.

On Wednesday, Aug. 13 around 12:45 a.m., officers responded to Albany Street near Broadway for reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers found evidence consistent with gunfire but did not find a victim at the scene.

Shortly afterward, staff from Albany Memorial Hospital notified police that a 24-year-old female entered the emergency room with a gunshot wound to her lower back.

Smith has been charged with one count of Attempted Murder 2nd and one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd.

She was arraigned yesterday afternoon in Albany City Criminal Court and remanded to the Albany County Jail.

Additionally, 26-year-old Aleana Rodriguez was also located inside the residence and taken into custody and charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance by the Rensselaer Police Department.
