SPRING VALLEY — Two Spring Valley brothers were sentenced to five years in federal prison Sept. 11 for possessing firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking.

Jonathan Alvarez, 29, and Edwin Alvarez, 30, were convicted under federal statute 18 U.S.C 924c.

The Spring Valley Police Department was notified in July 2023 by the New York State Police Troop F Violent Gang Narcotics Enforcement Team of a complaint involving drug trafficking by the Alvarez brothers in the area of 1 Tallman Pl. and 9 Lawrence St.

A joint operation between state and local police revealed that the brothers were distributing fentanyl pills disguised as M30 Oxycodone Hydrochloride pills.

A search warrant executed in December 2023 revealed numerous fentanyl pills disguised as M30 Oxycodone Hydrochloride pills, along with multiple firearms, ammunition, a bulletproof vest and U.S. currency.

The brothers were initially charged under New York state law with narcotics and firearms possession and released on their own recognizance.

In March 2024, a Spring Valley police officer heard what he believed to be gunshots in the area of Tallman Pl. and Seabring St.

Officers responding to the area discovered numerous spent shell casings and property damaged by bullet holes.

A search warrant executed at the location led to the discovery of more firearms, ammunition and M30 pills.

The Alvarez brothers were taken into federal custody in February by the FBI NY Westchester Safe Streets Task Force, Spring Valley Police Department and New York State Police Violent Gang Narcotics Enforcement Team.

Both brothers were charged with narcotics conspiracy and possession of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking and remanded to U.S. Marshals custody.

The brothers will serve three years of supervised release following their prison sentences.
