Care facility worker arrested in Owego on endangerment charge

OWEGO — The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 34-year-old care facility employee Sept. 4 on charges of endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person.

Nathan V. Schumacher of Candor was charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person, a class A misdemeanor.

The arrest followed a week-long investigation after reports of an incident at a residential care facility for people with developmental disabilities in Owego.

Schumacher, who worked at the facility, is accused of subjecting a resident to unlawful physical contact.

He is scheduled to appear in Owego Town Court at a later date.

In a separate case, sheriff’s investigators arrested a juvenile Aug. 29 following a reported burglary at Tioga Center Baptist Church in the Town of Tioga.

The juvenile is accused of unlawfully entering the church’s offices and intentionally damaging property.

The juvenile received appearance tickets and will appear before the Tioga County Probation Department and Family Court.
