UTICA — Two males were found fighting in the roadway on the 1500 block of Elm Street at approximately 12:50 a.m. Sept. 14 when officers working a patrol support detail came across them.
One of the males fled down a driveway and out of sight as officers approached.
Officers noticed the remaining male had suffered injuries from the fight, and bystanders said they believed they heard a shot and that the male may be suffering from a gunshot wound.
The suspect’s name was provided to officers by bystanders.
Officers found the individual had been shot once in the upper leg.
The Utica Fire Department was immediately requested and the victim was transported to Wynn Hospital with injuries that are not life threatening.
One officer began searching for the male who fled and immediately located a handgun lying on the ground upon entering the rear yard.
Other officers arrived on scene and began checking for the suspect.
Officers located a male hiding beneath bushes while checking a rear yard adjacent to the path of flight.
The male was immediately detained and positively identified as the individual who fled the initial encounter.
Dashir Jackson, 30, of Utica, was transported to the Utica Police Department.
Major Crimes Investigators were called back to work to handle the case.
Jackson was later charged with attempted assault in the first degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.
