ROME — Two people have been arrested for endangering the welfare of a 2-year-old child, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.
Michael J. Swisloski Jr., 25, the father of the victim, and Italia B. Gonzalez, 22, had the child in their custody between Friday, June 6, and Monday, June 9.
When the child was returned to his biological mother on Monday, he was found to have extensive injuries to his face, leg, head and throat that were not present the previous Friday when he left her care.
The Child Advocacy Center was initially notified about the incident by Wynn Hospital in Utica.
Detective Alexis Perry of the Rome Police Department, who is assigned to the Child Advocacy Center, was assigned to the case.
The investigation revealed that the injuries sustained by the 2-year-old were determined to be consistent with child abuse, specifically the injuries to the inside of his throat, which were deemed to be potentially life threatening.
On Aug. 19, Swisloski and Gonzalez were arrested by Detective Perry and were issued appearance tickets to appear in Rome City Court on Sept. 10.
Swisloski and Gonzalez were arraigned in Rome City Court on Sept. 10, charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a Class A misdemeanor.
They were released on their own recognizance and their proceedings were adjourned pending further adjudication.
An order of protection has been issued on behalf of the victim and services have been offered to the child through the Child Advocacy Center.
